Solving the "Preparation for Adulthood" (PfA) Challenge

young leaders academy eligibility

As an Assistant Head of Personal Development or Transition Lead, you aren’t just teaching, you’re architecting a future.

But finding resources that are rigorous enough for Ofsted yet accessible enough for MLD/ASD/SLCN students is a constant battle.

Young Leaders Academy provides the scaffold. Our awards turn “soft skills” into hard evidence for Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP).

Ofsted-Ready Evidence

Our digital and physical portfolios provide a clear "Gold Thread" of progress for the Personal Development inspection framework. Making evidencing work easy and reliable.

Scaffolded for SEND

Unlike mainstream leadership programs, our resources are designed for students with Moderate Learning Difficulties and Autism, ensuring no student is "priced out" of achievement.

FAQs

Q: How can we evidence "Personal Development" for Ofsted in a specialist secondary setting?

A: In a specialist setting, Ofsted looks for a "gold thread" of progress in non-academic areas. Our awards (such as Pitch Perfect and the Tenner Challenge) provide structured, portfolio-based evidence. They demonstrate how students with MLD, ASD, and SLCN are building resilience, confidence, and independence. By using an accredited framework already trusted by the Witherslack Group, schools can provide external validation of their "Quality of Education" and "Personal Development" metrics.

Q: What are the best vocational awards for students with Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD)?

A: The best vocational awards for MLD students are those that are "scaffolded"—breaking complex tasks into manageable, sensory-friendly modules. The Young Leaders Academy awards are specifically designed for this demographic. For example, the Tenner Challenge makes abstract enterprise concepts concrete, while Reach for the Stars provides a structured pathway for students to practice leadership in safe, predictable environments.

Q: How do Young Leaders Academy awards support EHCP "Preparation for Adulthood" (PfA) targets?

A: Our awards are mapped directly to the four PfA pillars. Pitch Perfect supports "Communication and Interaction" (Employment), while Community Heroes directly addresses "Community Inclusion." Each student receives a certificate and a portfolio of work that acts as rigorous evidence for their Annual Review, proving they are meeting their statutory transition goals for independent living and work-readiness.

Q: Are there leadership programs suitable for non-verbal students or those with high anxiety?

A: Yes. Unlike traditional leadership courses that rely on high-pressure public speaking, our programs—like those being implemented at Pebble Brook School—focus on "leading through action." Pitch Perfect uses low-stakes games to build confidence gradually, and our "action-based" awards allow students to demonstrate leadership through peer support, sports, and community service, making them accessible to neurodiverse learners.

Q: Why should a Transition Lead choose an external award over in-house certification?

A: While in-house certificates are valuable, external accreditation from a recognized body adds a layer of "Workplace Currency." Employers and FE Colleges recognize the rigor of an external award. Partnering with a provider that works with high-authority groups like Witherslack ensures your school is aligned with national best practices in SEND vocational training.

Our Academic Leaders were involved in the Pitch Perfect public speaking workshop with Young Leaders Academy. They learnt breathing strategies, strategies for structuring a speech, tips for keeping their audience engaged, as well as getting involved in a variety of different speaking games. It was great to see our students talking with passion and confidence about a variety of topics and supporting their peers through any nerves using the strategies that they had learnt. It was great to see both quiet and confident boys having a go at public speaking in front of the group, and hopefully you will see the boys contributing and presenting in class with greater self- awareness in the coming weeks.

Are we really giving children the 'how to' in public speaking? How to use their voice, use gestures, tone of voice, pitch and pace. Are they (children) being clear, concise and coherent in their communication? We have been using the Pitch Perfect program since last year and continue this year with 30+ students. It gives us a clear framework to work to.

The ‘Reach for the Stars’ sports leader award has transformed our playground. Before the Sports Leaders were at odds on what to do. Now they’re excited and have a whole library of activities and the playground is buzzing because of it.
