Why Starting Your Junior Sports Leaders Award
Without A Plan Is A Recipe For Disaster

If your school is planning to start a junior sports leaders award then our advice would be to STOP! DON’T DO IT! It’s really more headache than it’s worth and will actually create more – rather than less work.

We know only too well the heartache an unorganised and poorly thought through Junior Sports Leaders Award causes.

Yes – on paper (and after seeing or hearing about another school having success) it sounds like a great thing to do (and it can be).

BUT many schools simply choose a group of keen volunteers and say ‘off you go’ and expect them to succeed.

But it just brings more headaches and more work.

Then in a few weeks the SLT scratch their heads and wonder why playground activity has not improved. And why behaviour at play times is still poor. And why all the sports leaders don’t want to do it anymore.

The SLT will blame the sports leaders concept (or the P.E. Lead!) and say it doesn’t work – because they believed it should have helped with health and wellbeing, behaviour and increasing playground activity.

So why didn’t it work?

You’ve got to plan your JSLA with your eyes wide open. This will ensure a successful award that will run term-after-term, year-after-year with visible impact, improvements and create the success you really want and need from it.

But it needs a plan and it needs dedicated training. Internet print-offs and youtube-found games are all well and good but will ultimately fail because there is no solid foundation to believe-in and work towards.

The reality is the children need training and staff running the program need training too.

It’s great that you’re thinking about running a Junior Sports Leaders Award.

Because if done right, it will bring lots of incredible benefits to your school, kudos to you for introducing and running it and introduce a highly attractive type of student leadership that will help you and your school standout

So go ahead and book your free training and learn what a great Junior Sports Leaders Award looks like, how other schools are successfully doing it and how you too can start with ease, speed and success and of course without the extra work and headaches!
